Vection can be induced without global-motion awareness.

چکیده
A new vection illusion is reported. Vection was induced even though there was no consciously perceived global display motion corresponding to the self-motion. The resulting experience can be summarised as: "I feel that I am moving but I do not know why".

Enhancing the Visually Induced Self-Motion Illusion (Vection) under Natural Viewing Conditions in Virtual Reality
The visually induced illusion of ego-motion (vection) is known to be facilitated by both static fixation points [1] and foreground stimuli that are perceived to be stationary in front of a moving background stimulus [2]. In this study, we found that hardly noticeable marks in the periphery of a projection screen can have similar vection-enhancing effects, even without fixating or suppressing th...
متن کاملSpatialized auditory cues enhance the visually-induced self-motion illusion (circular vection) in Virtual Reality
“Circular vection” refers to the illusion of self-motion induced by rotating visual or auditory stimuli. Visually induced vection can be quite compelling, and the illusion has been investigated extensively for over a century. Rotating auditory cues can also induce vection, but only in about 25-60% of blindfolded participants (Lackner, 1977; Larsson et al., 2004). Furthermore, auditory vection i...
متن کاملVection and visually induced motion sickness: how are they related?
The occurrence of visually induced motion sickness has been frequently linked to the sensation of illusory self-motion (vection), however, the precise nature of this relationship is still not fully understood. To date, it is still a matter of debate as to whether vection is a necessary prerequisite for visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). That is, can there be VIMS without any sensation of ...
متن کاملVection induced by illusory motion in a stationary image.
Ilusory self-motion (vection) can be induced by large areas of visual motion stimulation. Here we demonstrate for the first time that illusory expansion can induce vection in the absence of any physical display motion.
متن کاملAccelerating self-motion displays produce more compelling vection in depth.
We examined the vection in depth induced when simulated random self-accelerations (jitter) and periodic self-accelerations (oscillation) were added to radial expanding optic flow (simulating constant-velocity forward self-motion). Contrary to the predictions of sensory-conflict theory frontal-plane jitter and oscillation were both found to significantly decrease the onsets and increase the spee...
